Binoculars in the higher segment are
made completely airtight after they have been filled with dry,
dust-free nitrogen. This
is known as purging. Purging ensures that the binoculars remain
completely free of moisture and dust when being used. The nitrogen
is fed into the upper segment of the binoculars and a slight over
pressure occurs. Argon can also be used instead of nitrogen to
purge binoculars. The advantage of using argon is that it does not
absorb or react chemically with water.
