Binoculars glossary Bean bag

BannerBinocularsGlossary

A bean bag or rice bag can also be used as an alternative to a tripod. A bean bag is a sealed bag filled with dried beans or PVC pellets, for instance. You simply place the bean bag on any surface, such as a wall, your car, a log or anything else that is readily at hand and then you use the bag as a support for your binoculars. The result is a perfectly stable image that has been achieved without damage to either the tripod or your expensive binoculars.

The advantage of a bean bag is that it is lightweight and inexpensive, although of course, it is less flexible than a good tripod and ball head.
